Caterpillar Leads the Way in Improving Air Quality
It is a simple fact: emissions from off-road, on-highway and stationary diesel equipment are a factor in the quality of the air we breathe. As an authorized Cat® dealership, we have a strong passion for environmental stewardship. Our company values include the goal of doing “no damage to the environment.” It is important that heavy equipment manufacturers continue to find ways to produce machinery that reduces harmful emissions.
Diesel Engines Emissions’ Effect on Air Quality
Diesel engines burn refined crude oil, which releases ground level-ozone and particulate matter. The emissions from burning those fuels affect air quality. Fortunately, modern diesel fuel engines are much cleaner than older models, but some harmful pollutants do remain.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets stringent standards on emissions of new diesel engines, including a huge reduction in the accepted sulfur content of diesel fuels. The petroleum industry has developed a clear solution in response with the advent of ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel which has a maximum of 15 parts per million of sulfur. Most diesel fuel sold in the U.S. is ULSD fuel.
Whether you by choosing to purchase new equipment or by switching to ULSD for your existing machinery, this fuel can significantly reduce vehicle particulate and nitrogen emissions.
Carbon Dioxide Emissions
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the transportation sector released an estimated 472 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere from the use of diesel fuel in 2021. These diesel fuel emissions totaled around 26% of the U.S. transportation industry’s total CO2 emissions and about 10% of the total U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions that year. These figures illustrate the direct impact of diesel fuel consumption in the U.S.
The Impact of the Clean Air Act of 1970
In 1970, the Clean Air Act established the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and gave it the authority to regulate the emissions from newly manufactured diesel engines. All engine and vehicle manufacturers are required to comply with these stringent regulations.
